Perfect Location

My extended family was in Oahu for a month when everyone needed to go through a 14 day quarantine, so we knew we needed a place that could give us plenty of room and would be a true pleasure to stay in. After we arrived at Maunalua Sunset, we knew we had picked the right place. There's a lanai in the backyard that looks directly out to the ocean and has a large table where we had our at-home meals. Sitting outside offered such beautiful views of the ocean (and sunsets) that we never ate a meal inside. The pool was a favorite too. People would hop in at all times of the day and night, occasionally going into the hot tub for a soak after a hike or just for relaxing. Having a separate full-size SubZero freezer and fridge gave us plenty of cold storage for our large group. We never ran out of room for all the groceries we bought. There is ample parking for 4 or more cars in the garage and roundabout driveway. The ocean access was great too. Being able to hop down into the ocean from your backyard to do some ocean swimming, paddle-boarding, snorkeling, etc was super convenient. In addition to the backyard ocean activities, you can walk or take a short drive to get to Koke'e Beach Park for more snorkeling, or China Walls for rock jumping. Being in the Portlock area of Oahu was close to a Costco, Safeway and many restaurants (please try the Leonard's Bakery Malasadamobile in the Koko Marina Shopping Center!), but also was a good launching pad to get to other parts of the island. Our stay at Maunalua Sunset has created life-long memories for all of us. We are super happy we chose it for our stay in Oahu.

The property has the most private location and spectacular views! The home is lush with tropical plants and trees -to me it was an oasis. The property is unique as it has a true “old Hawaiian” feel with spacious rooms and a large lanai for watching sunsets every evening. The layout of the house is perfect for guests to have their own space in large bedrooms with lanais. I fell asleep to the sounds of the ocean and woke up to the singing of birds. It was my definition of a slice of paradise.

Our stay was good. We had some issues locking some of the doors when we would leave, There was no air in the kitchen or dining area inside only a wall unit in living room that actually kept it really cool when we were there. All rooms had a wall unit except the room in the main living area that we did not use because we did not need it. And the restrooms in the master bedroom had to be closed to keep the bedroom cool so when showering it did get very hot after our showers. If you overuse the electrical you will need to pay for it. Recommend to have the pool heated a little since it was very cold to get into. Some of the towels in our master bedroom were dirty with makeup stains. They did provide towels for the beach and chairs as well which was great! It was very peaceful and private. Beautiful sunsets. No beach access. But still beautiful. They give you restaurant ideas and beaches to go to as well. Which was nice. Lots of cooking supplies. Overall stay was good!

unforgettable Hawaii trip

We’ve been coming to Hawaii for over 16 years for our annual family holiday and have stayed in many great homes — this one is definitely up there with the best. The location is incredible. Tucked away in a quiet part of Hawaii Kai, the house feels private and peaceful, yet it’s close to everything you might need. The views across the bay are absolutely stunning, and we loved watching the sunsets each evening. The layout of the property worked perfectly for our extended family. There’s plenty of space to spread out, relax, and enjoy time together — whether it was swimming in the pool, lounging in the courtyard, or just enjoying a drink on the lanai. The separate living areas made it easy for everyone to have their own space when needed, which is rare to find in a rental.A big thank you to Kino, the house manager, who was fantastic throughout our stay. He was helpful, responsive, and made everything easy from check-in to check-out.If we could suggest one improvement, it would be adding a comfortable outdoor lounge area on the lanai — somewhere to sit back and take in those incredible sunsets each evening. That would take an already amazing property to the next level. All in all, this house exceeded our expectations. It was the perfect base for another unforgettable Hawaii trip, and we’re already looking forward to coming back.
